ISCP at The Armory Show 2023: Solo Booth by Sarah Zapata
The International Studio & Curatorial Program presents a booth of textile artworks by Peruvian-American artist Sarah Zapata at The Armory Show’s 2023 edition.
A leading artist of her generation working with this medium, Zapata was an artist-in-residence at ISCP from July to September 2021, sponsored by the Lenore G. Tawney Foundation.
Showing for the first time in New York, the artist presents her quintessential pieces in an immersive installation. Vibrant furry sculptures stand in the center of the booth, while panels suggestive of gargoyles hang across vividly striped walls. Zapata states, “We as queer people are never to settle for the pleasures of here and now; rather, we are constantly working toward a new reality. That’s why I’m so attracted to working in installations: They employ the use of fantasy. I want to create these otherworldly experiences for the viewer to access ideas of potential and futurity.”
In her practice, Zapata explores pre-Hispanic textile techniques and multigenerational Peruvian feminine crafts through her intricate, labor-intensive fiber work. These manual processes are used to explore themes such as gender, colonialism, and performativity. She is also drawn to color’s emotional impact and its ability to convey meaning across time and regions.
Zapata has had solo exhibitions at John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Wisconsin; Museo MATE, Lima; Performance Space New York, New York; and El Museo del Barrio, New York; and group shows at the New Museum, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, and Kasmin Gallery, all in New York, among others. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Museo de Arte de Lima, Peru; the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, among others.
