Tuomas A. Laitinen

Tuomas A. Laitinen is an artist whose work fuses moving image, 3D animation, light, sound, installations and spatial interventions. His artworks are loaded with references ranging from ancient tragedies to philosophy to speculative fiction to experimental music to architectural history to contemporary media culture. More recently, Laitinen has conducted in-depth research on the global circulation of raw materials, namely copper, to address the micro and macro processes and concerns that inform contemporary reality. Laitinen’s art exposes the connections and negotiates between private and public, and poetic and political.

Tuomas A. Laitinen graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki in 2008. Laitinen has participated in exhibitions and festivals throughout the world including the Bucharest Biennale; Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul; SADE LA Gallery, Los Angeles; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai; Moving Image New York 2016; Mildura Palimpsest Biennale, Australia, 2015; and the 5th Cairo Video Festival, 2013. His recent major solo exhibition Fundamental Matter was held at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland in 2014-2015. In 2013, Laitinen was awarded the first Fine Arts Academy of Finland’s award for emerging Finnish artists.

Adrián S. Bará

Adrián S. Bará’s art practice combines his education as a filmmaker, his interest in visual narratives and his empirical approache to everyday situations. Bará’s work is generated through the appropriation of visual elements and materials taken from his immediate environment. He is interested in the processes of everyday life, inserting himself in various scenarios to produce work based on his experience.

Adrián S. Bará (born 1982, Mexico City) lives and works between Guadalajara and New York. He studied Film Studies at Capilano University in Vancouver and has exhibited extensively in Mexico. Recent projects include: Reconstrucción, Museo de Arte de Zapopan; Le Palais, Páramo Galería; and Guadalajara and American Cinema, Travesía Cuatro Gallery. In 2012, he was in residence at Casa Vecina in Mexico City where he produced the project Rock and Roll. In 2016, Bará was awarded the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) grant for emerging artists.

 

Anne Szefer Karlsen

Anne Szefer Karlsen is a curator, writer and editor. She is interested in artistic and curatorial collaborations, and in developing the language that surrounds contemporary art production. Szefer Karlsen teaches in both formal and informal educational settings.

Anne Szefer Karlsen is currently an Associate Professor in the MA Curatorial Practice program at Bergen Academy of Art and Design (2015-2021) and was the Director of Hordaland Art Centre, Bergen, Norway from 2008 to 2014. She has curated several exhibitions including The Norwegian Sculpture Biennale, Art Belongs to Those Who See It, 2015 and Lofoten International Art Festival, Just what is it that makes today so familiar, so uneasy?, 2013. Szefer Karlsen was also Associate Curator for Research and Encounters for Biennale Bénin, Inventer le monde: l’artiste citoyen, 2012. Her writings have appeared in Afterall, Billedkunst, and kunstkritikk.no, and in anthologies such as Condition Report, 2013, and Making Biennials in Contemporary Times, 2015. Szefer Karlsen is series editor for Dublett, a book series featuring artists’ works through anthologies and artists’ books, 2012-2016. She was also co-editor of Self-Organised, 2013, and Localisert/Localised, 2009.
