Stephanie Gudra

Stephanie Gudra’s work deals with the history and production of images. In her art, there are often references to visual arts and its techniques, general methodical processes, and the metaphysics of images and signs. Gudra’s works question what an image is, and reveals various relationships between the medium and the image.

Stephanie Gudra (born 1981, Germany) has a Master of Arts in philosophy, German philology, and general linguistics from of the University of Münster, Germany, and a diploma in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts Münster. Gudra is currently in a postgraduate program at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.

Yvonne Mullock

Yvonne Mullock has a multi-disciplinary studio practice with a particular focus on nature and crafts. She incorporates collage, sculpture, ceramics, video and textiles in her work, and explores ideas of authorship, craft and labor, for both gallery settings and site-specific installations. Mullock often works with individuals and groups of people to develop pieces that are collaborative, socially engaged and performative.

Yvonne Mullock is a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art who is currently based in Calgary, Canada. Over the past fifteen years, she has participated in artist residency programs in Scotland, England, Canada, and the United States. Recent exhibitions include: Dark Horse, Stride Gallery, Calgary; Charrette Roulette: FABRIC, Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton; HIT & MISS, Esker Foundation|Contemporary Art Gallery, Calgary; Home Economics, Textile Museum of Canada, Toronto; Future Station: 2015 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton; Atlas Sighed: 2104 Calgary Biennial; and Beaver Fever, Project Room, Glasgow.

Ase (pronounced “ah-sheh”; also spelled ashe) Yoruba words often have multiple meanings: Ase is generally defined as “the power to make things happen” and also refers to the spiritual life force that flows through things, much like the Chinese concept of chi. Deepening the exploration of my relationship with my ancestors, Ase, a drawing that measures almost two meters high by three meters long. For this piece, charcoal, a medium with archaic roots, is used to evoke powerful waves crowned by troubled sky. Towards the bottom of the drawings, the waves melt into abstraction, dripping onto the white surface of the paper. The title Ase, referring to Yoruba culture, embodies my ongoing relationship with my ancestors, those who perished in the sea as well as those with whom known ties have been cut by the transatlantic slavetrade. When creating this work, I also reflected on what it meant to be Black in the Americas and how my identity had been defined by the dominant society. I turned to the writings of Stuart Hall, Franz Fanon as well as of Edouard Glissant, whose concept of “creolisation” serves as a focal point in my practice going forward.

AKI INOMATA creates her artworks through collaborations with living creatures. Through them, she explores topics related to identity and questions the status quo.

AKI INOMATA (born Tokyo, 1983) graduated with an MFA in Intermedia Art from Tokyo University of the Arts. Recent exhibitions include Kenpoku Art, Japan, 2016; Eco Expanded City, WRO Art Center, Poland, 2016; emergencies! 025: AKI INOMATA ‘Inter-Nature Communication,’ NTT InterCommunication Center, Tokyo, 2015; and Digital Choc, Institut français du Japon-Tokyo, 2015.
